Advent Reflections 2018 : Day 11 : Bond, James Bond.

There’s not many links to Christmas when it comes to James Bond, except for plenty of snow and the character Dr. Christmas Jones from ‘The world is Not Enough’ (and the terrible cracker suitable jokes that followed). However, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, George Lazenby’s only film as Bond, was set at Christmas time and released in December 1969. It had a bobsled chase which was pretty unique.

There was always a Bond film on over the Christmas holidays when I was growing up, watching it became a tradition for me. As our children are growing we find ourselves fashioning new traditions year on year. The advent ‘flags’ with chocolate coins and nativity characters came pretty early and this year we borrowed a family friend’s tradition of sleeping under the tree the day we put it up.

I don’t think I’ll ever mention James Bond and the film Frozen in the same sentence ever again but this theme does remind me of the Frozen spin off where Olaf goes in search of Christmas traditions for Elsa and Ana.

The thing about Christmas traditions is that many of them have nothing at all to do with the reason for the season, at least not as many as when I was a child… So here’s some things to think about;

  • What kind of Holiday do you really want?
  • Which are the most meaningful (spiritual) aspects of Christmas for you?
  • How can you focus on those things?
  • Think about your childhood memories of Christmas.
  • What was magical for you?
  • Are you able to make a few changes in order to create a Christmas that is meaningful (spiritual) for your family?

tell me what you think...
