Advent Reflections 2018 : Day 23 : The Matrix

You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” –The Matrix

Just one of the iconic lines from the matrix trilogy and I think it’s probably how the annunciation goes down in the science fiction version of the Nativity that resides only in the deep recesses of my imagination.

The 1999 cult movie starring Keanu Reeves questions what is real and what is simulated reality. While purely a fictitious work by the Wachowskis brothers, the movie touches on themes which challenge the current model of society and points to the problem of indoctrination and a lack of awareness amongst the populace. I wonder if Christianity is seen as indoctrination and therefore a concern for people in a post-secular culture 19 years on…

On the other hand, perhaps we have something valuable to say, to bring to the table, to live out in our cynical world. Perhaps we need to be more like the characters in the movie who question reality, who desire to move beyond the status quo?

“Unfortunately, nobody can be told what the Matrix is.
You have to see it for yourself.”

if we take the matrix as a metaphor for our spiritual walk with God then it is worth considering how you are inviting others to join you on the journey, to see it for themselves.

If you are brave enough, perhaps it’s time to pop over to the neighbours and ask if they want to join you for the midnight service or even christmas morning or to join your church boxing day ramble or whatever you are doing…

tell me what you think...
